3 Things to Do in January that Will Make Your Garden SO Much Better

I didn’t even try to heat my greenhouse this winter. In years past I’ve attempted to keep plants in there from November on and I think it gave me premature gray hair. The constant monitoring of temperatures, the hauling of water on 10 degree days, it was a lot. But overall it was the incredible cost of heating that has deterred me.

On sunny days, even when outside temperuatures are in the high teens and twenties the greenhouse can get a toasty 60-70. Sunny days have been few and far between this winter. And although I’m super grateful for the snow that’ll allow me to water my garden this summer I’m also grateful for those rare sunny days where the greenhouse becomes a warm escape. Days where I can begin to organize my pots, breathe in the humid, soil heavy air, and dream about the season to come.

Landscape Design: French Country in Spanish Fork, UT

June 5, 2015 by Lacey Leave a Comment

Last post date is Feb. 23rd.  Wow that’s a long time.  It doesn’t say much for my 2015 new years resolution to be a better blogger, but I’ll try to catch up.  Between finishing up another school year, taking care of the baby, and building my landscape design clientele, I’ve been MIA on allmyfriendsareflowers.com.  Just to prove I have been a little busy, here’s one of the projects I’ve been working on this spring.

barney residence

When I first met with the client she expressed her desire to have a French country landscape design to match the style of her newly constructed home. My mind flew to summer 2012 where I spent a month wandering through Europe with my husband.  I felt like it couldn’t be three years since the trip because the formal garden of Versailles came so vividly to mind.  With inspiration from the most renowned  formal French garden in the world I began creating this design.  This home is in the foothills at the mouth of a beautiful, but very windy canyon.  The varied slopes and grade changes were a challenge that was made a little easier by their builder constructing some retaining walls around the home.

Steep grades and natural stone boulders aren’t considered classically French, so formality was emphasized through dwarf boxwood hedges both in the front and backyard.  Emerald arborvitae around the perimeter works to unify the design with an evergreen hedge and doubles as a wind block.  Perennials in shades of purple, white, and yellow planted in between the boxwood hedges bring color and movement.

Going Green- A Foliage Bridal Bouquet

August 6, 2014 by Lacey Leave a Comment

The “go green” trend has influenced more than just the environmentally friendly.  And while I’m all about recycling and all that jazz, I love what it has meant for floral work.  Today I attended a floral design teacher workshop where we got tons of lab ideas for our students. We made these all foliage hand tied bridal bouquets, and while I think their sized more for bridesmaids the principle is the same: clean and green.

This bouquet features a twist, some Design Master Rose Gold floral spray.  Adding a metallic accent adds some flair without overtaking the overall green effect.

Patience. . . .

March 1, 2013 by Lacey Leave a Comment

Snow still wraps itself tightly around the perimeter of my yard forming a barrier that thwarts the hopeful bulbs patiently waiting their turn to peek through snowy boundaries and test the cool temperatures of Spring.  The border hold me at bay like a child waiting for a turn at a pinata.

I hear that temperatures will soar by Saturday and I’ve mentioned to my children that Saturday will be a yard work day.  I think the threat is just real enough that they may be hoping for one last snow storm –nothing too big -just something that will be a bit of a deterrent for a mom who is anxious get started in the yard.
